The first session is an intake session where I get a sense of what’s bringing you in, what your goals are, what you think is important to tell me about yourself, and any other relevant information.

I don’t believe that anyone can give a concrete answer to this question since it depends on each client’s presenting issues, goals, and therapy progress. Therapy is generally available to my clients for as long as we both see fit. Some clients may prefer short-term therapy while others may prefer a long-term therapy. There is no one-size-fits-all.

I am legally and ethically obligated to keep your records, your attendance in therapy, and the content of our sessions fully confidential. It’s important to me that therapy is your space in which you have control, and I will never share any of the content of our sessions without your permission.
There are a few exceptions to this:
If I am legally required to break confidentiality (i.e. if you are a certain and immediate threat to yourself or another person, or if you report child or elder abuse/neglect)
If you give me written permission to consult with another provider to coordinate care (a doctor, psychiatrist, etc.)
If your records are subpoenaed during legal proceedings
